Beaverton, Ontario is the largest community of the Township of Brock in Ontario, Canada. It is located on Beaver River on the east side of Lake Simcoe. It is about 110 kilometres northeast of Toronto. The Brock Township is part of the Durham Region along with the Thorah Township. Beaverton real estate has seen increased interest in recent years because of its strategic location as a regional hub for businesses, commuter communities and recreational amenities.
Beaverton’s history goes back to the 1820s when Scots settlers established a mill town that attracted other tradesmen, churches and schools. The population waned in the 1900s, but the addition of Canadian National Railways service to the area boosted tourism and population once again.
Today, Beaverton boasts of historic buildings including the former Town Hall and the Beaverton Public Library, both designated by the Ontario Heritage Act as structures of architectural and historic significance. The Alexander Muir Park located near the library honors the author of Canada’s unofficial national anthem, “Maple Leaf Forever.” Muir was a teacher and principal in Beaverton schools.
Beaverton public schools are administered by the Durham Region School Board. Families also have access to a Catholic school in the community and other schools in neighbouring townships.
As bucolic as Beaverton may seem, the community is host to a range of cultural programs throughout the year. Music festivals, live performances by the Beaverton Town Hall Players, a Fall Fair, a Winter Carnival and many otherevents are part of the community calendar. In addition, long-time residents point to the Beaver River Museum and Beaverton Harbour are some more of the area’s charming landmarks. Canada’s oldest movie theatre, The Strand Theatre is in Beaverton as is the Old Stone Church dating back to 1853.
As the largest settlement in Brock, Beaverton is the commercial hub for the area. Tourism is also an important part of the local economy with cottage vacationers boosting population during the summer.
