The neighbourhood of Lansing in the City of Toronto is fairly secluded from the bustling metropolitan area in spite of its central location. Lansing real estate is shielded by its borders with York Cemetery on the north, Don River on the west and the wooded area on the south that separates Lansing from the Armour Heights neighbourhood.

Yonge Street on the east end of the neighbourhood takes Lansing motorists to Toronto via Highway 401 with an on-ramp just south of Sheppard Avenue. Commuters can also access the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line through the Sheppard station. Toronto Transit Commission buses operate on the main arterial roads to deliver passengers to and from the subway station.

Many homes in Lansing date back to the 1920s and the 1950s when housing developments began to take over this quiet area. The population of present-day Lansing is best described by their homes: Post-war bungalows for older families with grownup children, and larger, contemporary homes for wealthier families with younger children. Lansing homes on ravine lots with views of Don River Valley are highly valued.

Lansing residents have access to two elementary schools, a Catholic school and the Earl Haig Secondary School known for its superior academic and arts program. Seneca College has a campus in the southeast section of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue. Residents also have easy access to York University, Ryerson and University of Toronto.

Lansing is the site of the North York Civic Centre which houses a public library, an aquatic centre, skating rink, Art Gallery of North York and the Toronto Centre for the Arts Theatre. Outdoor recreation in Lansing includes scenic walking trails along Don River and a nearby downhill ski area. The Don Valley Golf Course is easily accessed using Yonge Street.

The neighbourhood has managed to preserve some of its heritage homes including the Joseph Sheppard home built in 1835 and the Michael Shepard house constructed in 1859.

The main retail district for Lansing residents is the area around Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street with the Sheppard Shopping Centre as the main hub. On the western section, the retail district is around Bathurst Street.
