Glen Park is a diverse neighbourhood in Toronto’s district of North York, Ontario. Glen Park real estate is defined by Lawrence Avenue on the north, Eglinton Avenue on the south,Bathurst Street on the east and a section of Canadian National Railways tracks on the west end.
Motorists can take either Bathurst or Dufferin Streets directly to downtown Toronto. Allen Expressway bisects the neighbourhood giving commuters easy access to Toronto’s highway network. The area is served by three subway stations on the Yonge-University –Spadina line. Buses operated by the Toronto Transit Commission service local routes connecting to the subway stations.
The ethno-cultural mix includes a large contingent of Italian-Canadians, Orthodox Jews and many minority groups. This mix has given rise to an eclectic selection of housing styles. Older bungalows dating back to the 1940s include interesting features such as octagonal windows and large bay windows in front. Brick bungalows built in 1955 up to 1972 are primarily split-level or ranch style designs. Older Glen Park homes have been replaced gradually with custom-designed housing as new residents move in.
Glen Park has a low-income district consisting of rent-controlled projects intended for limited income families. Newly-arrived Canadians often begin their new lives here.
Families have access to two public elementary schools, one with a French immersion program, five Catholic schools, three Jewish schools and a public secondary school. Post-secondary options include York University and University of Toronto. The Glen Park Public School was recognized by the National Quality Institute with a Canada Award of Excellence for outstanding test scores.
Recreational facilities include several public park, playgrounds and sports facilities. Glen Long Park includes an outdoor rink, swimming pool and a bocce court. The Glen Long Community Centre and Columbus Centre host social gatherings, cultural activities and art exhibits.
Residents can choose from the Lawrence Square Shopping Centre near the Allen Expressway or the Lawrence Plaza closer to Bathurst Street. Other retail sections can be found on Dufferin Street, Marlee Avenue and Bathurst Street.
The community of Glen Park grew from what was once one of the best cattle-breeding farms in Canada to become a showcase of the country’s multicultural efforts.
